About

My name is Becky Shewell

I am a Qualified Teacher of the Deaf and creator and founder of The Shewell IntersectionaliTREE; an online database library of books with intersectional characters that our diverse young people today can relate to. I believe that positive and incidental character representation in children's literature is vital for our diverse and intersectional young people, allowing them to see themselves represented for improved self-esteem and identity development. The Shewell IntersectionaliTREE was developed alongside postgraduate/Masters level research with The University of Manchester, and presented in a talk to training Teachers of the Deaf in May 2023. The talk was selected for the BAToD North national conference for Teachers of the Deaf in October 2023 and has since gained traction in the Deaf Education and children's literature fields, including the delivery of a workshop at the NEU LGBT+ Conference in Birmingham in February 2024, as well as participating as a advisory board panel member for the Arts Council England Project Reflecting Disabilites. With special thanks to
Dr. Lindsay Jones and Dr. Helen Chilton at the University of Manchester.
